Acrylic and pencil on 1200 x 900mm on canvas.
A Sunday outing took us on a journey to an old historic home/hotel on Neudorf road, Moutere, Tasman. I was able to take photos of the interior and noticed the remnants of beautiful old wallpaper. This inspired me and I wanted to find a way to incorporate what I had seen into a portrait style piece of art.
While replicating the wallpaper I realised the pattern was not consistent which led me to believe that the paper was hand painted though I cannot be 100% certain.
The ground floor has wooden walls and fragments of hessian over laid with up to 4 layers of paper, the original layer most likely from its conversion from Cobb style to colonial in the early 1900s. I feel the layers represent a visual diary of the house’s history.
My husband is a descendant of the first settlers to the area so the piece feels very nostalgic.
In this piece I have captured a moment where a girl appears to be daydreaming, perhaps reflecting on her past, present and future.
The artwork comes with a photo of Wyperserfontein (water fountain) or the Plough Inn. Also a scrap of wall saved from is walls before it disappears forever.
The painting is completed with a varnish seal for protection and is ready to hang.
